Dragones, playas con el agua azul turquesa, deporte, naturaleza, grandes ruinas y una temperatura media de veinticinco grados. Es la Riviera Maya, paraíso bañado por las aguas del Mar Caribe; una zona llena de contrastes de la que me podría enamorar, pero de la que no todo me gusta.

Os voy a hablar de una antigua ciudad maya situada junto al mar, que se llama Tulum. Ubicada a 128 kilómetros al sur de Cancún, Tulum fue una de las principales ciudades que los mayas construyeron cerca del océano. Hoy se encuentra en un Parque Nacional con 644 hectáreas de extensión.

Dragons, beaches with turquoise water, sports, nature, great ruins, and an average temperature of 25 degrees Celsius / 77 degrees Fahrenheit. It is the Mayan Riviera, a paradise bathed in the waters of the Caribbean Sea; a zone full of contrasts that I could fall in love with, but that I do not entirely like.
I am going to talk to you about an old, Mayan city, situated next to the sea, called Tulum. Located 128 kilometers/ approximately 79 miles south of Cancún, Tulúm was one the main cities that the Mayans built near the ocean. Today it is found in a National Park that extends over 644 hectares / approximately 1591 acres.

Los vestigios, templos y ruinas se extienden seis kilómetros a lo largo de la costa. Todo un prodigio desde la mirada de alguien tan pequeñito como yo. ¡Y encima de piedra! Es difícil de concebir para alguien de madera.

The relics, temples, and ruins are spread out over 6 kilometers / 3.7 miles along the coast. Such a wonder from the perspective of someone so small like me. And it is made of stone! It is so difficult to imagine for someone made of wood.

Lamentablemente, Tulum cuenta con todo tipo de comodidades modernas. Vamos, que se ya está preparado para recibir turistas a tutiplén. En fin, yo disfruté mucho con los templos mayas de El Castillo, del Dios Descendente, de los Frescos y del Viento.
Fue una jornada durísima para alguien tan pequeño. Pero terminé realmente encantado. Además, como me regalaron un sombrerito mexicano, de estos de los mariachis, mi madera no terminó demasiado curtida por el sol. Además,. luego tuve una recompensa acuática, en mi caso merecida.

Sadly, Tulum counts on all types of modern comforts. Acutally, it is already prepared to receive a multitud of tourists. I ended up enjoying very much the Mayan temples of “The castle,” of “The descending God,” of “The frescoes”, and of “The wind”.
It was a very hard work day for someone so small. However, I ended up being truly delighted. Besides, since they gave me a little Mexican hat, like the ones the Mariachis wear, my wood did not end up getting too tanned by the sun. Also, I later had an aquatic reward, in my case well-deserved.

La Riviera Maya, verdadero paraíso natural bañado por las aguas del mar Caribe, es un litoral de más de 120 kilómetros. Cada vez más turístico, cuenta con playas paradisíacas, como la del propio Tulum, y se puede hacer allí toda clase de deportes y actividades de ocio. En ocasiones, incluso, sin salir del hotel.
Decir que la playa de Tulum me enamoró, pero me dieron mucho miedo esos dragones salvajes que por allí andan. Bueno, en realidad, son iguanas, pero son más grandes que yo...

The Mayan Riviera, a true natural paradise, bathed in the waters of the Caribbean Sea, is a coast line of more than 120 kilometers/ approximately 75 miles. Everyday more touristic, you are sure to find paradisical beaches, like Tulum’s own beach, and all types of sports and leisure activities, on occasion, without even leaving the hotel.
I fell in love with the beach in Tulum, but those wild dragons around there scared me quite a bit. Well, they are really iguanas, but they are bigger than me…

¿Sabéis? Lo que no me gusta nada es ese tipo de turismo de todo pagado en el hotel. Por si no os lo han contado, os lo cuento yo: son grandes multinacionales, casi siempre ajenas al país, las que se establecen en las playas de toda Hispanoamérica, adueñándose de sus recursos naturales, que arrebatan a los ciudadanos de estos países y llevándose un dinero y un turismo que apenas tienen otra incidencia en estas tierras que el verse espoliadas. En fin. Yo soy un viajero y me gusta conocer a las gentes de los sitios a los que voy, no quedarme sin salir del hotel. Además, como soy una marioneta y no bebo, la barra libre no me interesa.
Eso sí, decir que la gente mexicana me trató de lujo.

You know? What I do not like at all about that type of tourism is the “all-inclusive” aspect of the hotel. In case they have not told you, I will: they are huge multinational companies, almost always from other countries, that establish themselves on the beaches all around the Hispanic world; they take control of their natural resources, which infuriates the citizens of those countries. Then, these companies receive all of the money and create tourism that barely has a function in these areas other than spoiling them. In the end, I am a traveler and I like to meet the people that live in the places where I go, not just stay in the hotel without leaving. Besides, I am a puppet and I do not drink, so the open bar does not interest me.
Although it is true, the Mexcian people treated me in a luxurious way.
